OK, we know this rod arrived too late for most fly fishers! However, we are very proud of it, and it is certainly still worthy of its own newsletter. The Ukraine tube colours are a complete coincidence. We decided the colours 2 years ago!
We kept being asked why we didn’t have a great travel fly rod. Some of you may remember our Frequent Flyer, which, was very rugged, compact, and very affordable, however, was chunky, and not so sensitive (understatement). Certainly, something you could rely on, however not outstanding in the world of fly rods, nor something you would show off to your mates!
We would like to think we are great at travel rods, with our super compact rods, multi-function rods and interchange tips, however making a statement rod in the world of fly fishing was one hell of a challenge. So… what could we do to make a difference? If we are going to stand out, with what we believe will be the best travel fly rod, what should it be?
The decision was to continue the multi-function theme, to develop one travel fly that fished both 9ft #6 weight for still waters and 7ft #4 weight for streams…Why can’t I have a travel fly rod that covers 2 rod weights? Sounds easy!
It also needed to compare in action and materials to be as good as, if not better that any fly rod, not just travel fly rods out there.
So, like normal, let’s find out if someone has tried this before, and guess what, someone has done! Meet the Sharpe’s “Aquarex” Travel Smuggler, which was a 9ft and 7ft 6” 2 handle rod. It is now vintage and collectable, retailing in its day at £299.99.
It also needed to compare in action and materials to be as good as, if not better that any fly rod, not just travel fly rods out there.

It was a 2-year challenge, with many samples and test rods, working with the top Lake District fly angler (anonymous), to see if we can take the same concept and make it better. Well, we think we did it, however, unless we come into money, we will never find the original rod to compare. What we do have is a rod to be proud of, that we would be happy to be compared to premium fly rod. Yes, we have a few changes, making ours more compact and making it an 8, not 6 section rod, to be more compact.

SUPER IDEA AND PERFECT FUNCTION

I was very interested, when I saw this two in one rod, so I had to buy it and to try it. As the fishing season has ended in the middle of September, I tried both lengths at the swimming pond in our garden. The results were perfect: roll casts 15 m and more, and if you have place enough behind, 20m and more are no difficulty with BOTH lengths. I am looking forward the next fishing season yet with my new rod(s)! Greetings from Austria

This rod or should I say rods is a great way to have to weights of fly rod with you wherever you’re traveling. Lightweight, durable and casts like a dream.

I thought it would be good, however didn’t expect it to be that good. Performing perfectly at both fishing weights. It is in the back on the truck and is my go to rod. A great rod, not just for travelling
