As the trout fishing season approaches, 15^th March to 30^th September, anticipation ripples through the angling community. Our South Lakes, river Kent, one of the fastest flowing, spring-run rivers in the country, is home to brown trout, sea trout, and salmon, making it an enticing destination for anglers. It is also one of the only rivers with the original British white claw crayfish, so English Nature has designated the River as a Special Site of Scientific Interest.

Fishing clubs play a crucial role in the angling community along the River Kent. These clubs manage stretches of the river, preserving the natural environment. There are several fishing clubs associated with the river, including Kent Angling Association, Burneside Angling and Staveley & District Angling Association. The centre of Kendal from Victoria Bridge to 100m south of Nether Bridge is also free fishing, that only requires a national rod license for anglers 16 and over.

All of these clubs have been actively involved in promoting responsible fishing practices and conservation efforts to maintain the health of the river ecosystem.

Joining a fishing club, enhances your enjoyment of angling while contributing to the conservation of this scenic river. The Kent offers a rich fishing experience in some beautiful places, with game fishing brown trout, salmon and sea trout and, with various methods allowed (fly, worm and spinning) depending on time of year. Remember to adhere to regulations, obtain permits, and carry out responsible fishing practices.

We are lucky our local river is full of wild brown trout, a species that’s incredibly hard to find in many areas in the UK. KENT ANGLING CLUB

Kent Angling control an 8 mile stretch of the river Kent. The start of the season sees some nice brown trout up to 5lb on the Fly. Best flies to use are March Brown, Snipe & Purple, Black Pennel.

FLY FISHING FOR TROUT AT BESSY BECK

If you fancy fly fishing, check out Bessy Beck, which is a fantastic fly fishing venue, with day fishing prices from £25. It is located on the A685 a few miles west of Tebay. February fishing saw some great days, with David Warwick catching 11 on Cats Whisker and Peter Mathews having 9 on Apps Worm. On the 13^th 6 anglers caught 180 fish on Buzzers, Damsels and Apps worms. Carlo Longhorn caught 23 on Damsel and black Snake and Kevin Blackwood caught 18 using Klinkhammers, and Jed Armstrong’s party had over 50 fish with 3 over 10lbs.
